Student opportunities and activities

At Sylvania Public School, we offer a variety of programs in the classroom and across the school to help students build new skills, make friends and explore new interests.

Our programs include:

• school sport, athletics and inter-school competitions
• creative and performing arts groups: junior dance, senior dance and hip-hop dance groups
• student art exhibition based on famous artists, providing art history and art appreciation to all students
• musical showcase which provides all students (Kindergarten to Year 6) with the opportunity to shine on stage
• theatre visits to enhance student appreciation of the arts and supports aspiring actors
• Spanish (Kindergarten - Year 2) and Greek (Years 3- Year 6) cultural and language programs taught by a trilingual teacher
• immersive excursions and incursions including UOW Science Space which supports our science and technology program
• public speaking and debating
• lunch time interest-based clubs including drawing, painting, craft, collaborative games and 'Story and Surprise'
• student leadership opportunities: Our school parliament provides an authentic opportunity for students to participate in the running of their school based on the Australian system of government. Students are democratically elected to positions such as Prime Minister, portfolio ministers and Speaker, and follow procedures similar to the Australian Parliament such as moving and debating motions, holding question time and making speeches.
• activities that support high potential and gifted learners: 'Shakespeare at Sylvania'. Intellectually curious learners are engaged in the works of William Shakespeare, enhancing their language skills, critical thinking, creativity, and cultural literacy.

Our extra-curricular highlights

Debating and public speaking

Students develop their thinking, communication and teamwork skills through debating and public speaking. They also have the chance to compete in local and state events.

Creative and performing arts

Our drama, music, choir and dance programs help students be creative and express themselves. Each year, our dance and choir groups perform in The Sutherland Shire Music Festival (SSMF) at the Pavillion Performing Arts Centre Sutherland, The Combined Schools Dance Festival at Marana Hall Hurstville and in The Spotlight Dance Festival at the Seymour Centre.

Visual arts - study of famous artists

Each year, one of our classrooms rooms is transformed into an incredible art gallery where every student displays their artwork for friends and families to admire. This is not to be missed!

Trips and excursions

Our students enjoy getting out of the classroom to explore, learn and try new things. Our excursions are linked to curriculum outcomes and cover a broad range of subjects. These experiences help students grow, build confidence and see how their learning connects to the world.
